 Anita Takes the Plunge into Online Social Networking

Online social networking is fast-becoming the medium of choice for a large segment of our population. The power the World Wide Web to instantly spread the latest news of the day has given birth to unique forms of expression and community. Three of the most popular social networking platforms today are blogging, Facebook and Twitter.
 
Blogs or (web + logs), have been around the longest. Blogs still offer the reader the best online format for fast, in-depth information. Depending on the publisher, blogs offer community interaction through comments and forums. There are literally millions of blogs on almost every topic imaginable. If you have a unique passion just "Google" it and you're almost certain to find a related blog.

In only 5 years "Facebook" now consistently ranks among the top five Internet destinations. Boasting more than 300 million users, half of which log on daily, Facebook provides a fast-evolving online social networking experience. On Facebook you control your network of "friends". They can be family, co-workers, social acquaintances or an old school chum from 20 years ago. The Facebook experience is reaching into all areas of our society. Enjoy Seinfeld reruns? Then join the Seinfeld fan club. Fan clubs exist for entertainment, politics, business and philanthropic endeavors. In many respects Facebook is just beginning. It has carved itself an immense online presence like few others and should be around for years to come.

"Twitter" is the new kid on the online block. Like most good ideas "Twitter" is simple and easy to use. No steep learning curve here. The premise is simple. The "Tweeter" gets 140 characters to express themselves. That's it and there ain't no more. What is fascinating is how one simple "tweet" can go viral and spread across the entire base of Twitter users. Like Facebook you control your immediate online audience called "Followers" and follow as many "Tweeters" as you like. A wide variety of whos- who now maintain Twitter accounts with some personal accounts reaching into the hundreds of thousands of followers.
 
While admittedly new to these online social networking platforms I have taken the plunge and now have a blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts.
